August 30, 2002 by James J. Portuner Evergreen State College Sports Information Director Down 2-0 in second half Whitworth wins in overtime 3-0. OLYMPIA, Wa - It took Northwest College (0-0, 0-1), Kirkland, Wa., twenty-five minutes to get the opening game jitters under control and score their first goal of the season. Following a smoothing save by starting goal keeper J.J. Geise, the Eagles had the ball in Whitworth's end of the field in two bounces and Scott Sterley had the ball in the back of the Pirates net a seconds later. In the 79th minute Bryan Chud put NW ahead 2-0 and Whitworth (0-0, 0-1), Spokane, Wa., woke up to win the opening men's game of the inaugural Arno Zoske Invitational Soccer Tournament at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wa., 3-2 in overtime. "When we were down two goals and had only ten players on the field," said Whitworth head coach Sean Bushey, "I knew the players had to show what they were made of." Coach Bushey is hoping that none of his other games this season go as this one did. Eleven minutes into the game starting defender J.R. Remmington was carried off the field by the local paramedic crew due to a leg injury. Eleven minutes remaining in the second half backup goalie Jon Bosh was ejected for supposedly interfering with an opposing player outside of his box. The following kick by Northwestern hit a Whitworth player in the hands, directly in front of the goal, and penalty kick was called. Eagle forward Bryan Chud put the penalty kick in the bottom right corner of the goal and coach Bushey's team trailed 2-0. "For some reason the ejection and penalty kick sparked us," Bushey remarked. "The team came alive and we scored twice in less than two minutes and we were on a roll." With confidence on their side, the Pirates needed only 8 minutes and 34 seconds of overtime play to win the game on Kurt Kagawa header directly in front of the goal. In the 98 minute contest Whitworth used three goalies, who gave up 2 goals and recorded 4 saves. Northwest goalkeeper J.J. Geise was awarded the loss in a 3 goal, 9 save effort. On Saturday Whitworth opens against Evergreen State College at noon and Northwest plays Capilano College (North Vancouver, B.C.) at 4 p.m. It will be the first game of the tournament for both Evergreen and Capilano. |
