WB takes advantage with Geoducks playing a man down
SALEM, Ore. - Sophomore Danny Agee scored his first goal of the season, snapping a 2-2 tie with just over four minutes to play, as Western Baptist topped Evergreen in a Cascade Collegiate Conference encounter, 4-2.
Four different players scored for the Warriors (7-6-2, 3-4 CCC) who have won three of their last four league contests. The Geoducks (7-6, 4-3) came into the match having won six of the last seven.
With the score knotted 2-2 at intermission, Western Baptist had the second half advantage playing downwind, but couldn't convert on several opportunities. However, the turning point came when Evergreen midfielder Josh VanTine was issued a red card for a retaliatory tackle with just over 10 minutes left, forcing the Geoducks to play a man down.
With the clock winding down Dustin Karstetter sent a ball over the top from beyond midfield. Agee darted past a defender to chase the ball down, cleared for a shot, and delivered the game-winner by the right side of goalkeeper Tommy Kneeshaw. Taurai Daka capped the scoring with a 12-yarder a minute later, assisted by Mamoru Miyazaki.
Western broke on top in the first half at 25 minutes when Miyazaki finished a corner kick delivered by Seth Burke. Evergreen answered less than three minutes later when defender Jake Watterberg was called for a pass back to the goalkeeper while making a sliding save in front of the net. Jason Gjertsen converted the ensuing kick to tie the match.
Evergreen took the lead in the 39th minute when a drop pass by Gjertsen was followed by a Jonah Millet cross to Chris Pugh who hammered a shot into the upper-third from 16 yards. Western Baptist responded to tie the game before the half when Burke followed a Mike Geleynse shot that was knocked down by the keeper.
The Warriors controlled play in the second period, outshooting the Geoducks 13-4 in the frame. Western had a 25-12 shot advantage for the match. Kneeshaw kept the Warriors off the board for much of the second half, and made an outstanding kick-save at 55 minutes. He finished with nine saves, while his counterpart, Brandon Weber, tallied three.
Western Baptist continues conference action at home on Saturday, hosting Northwest at 2 p.m. Evergreen will also play on Saturday at Warner Pacific.
