Geoducks show Sunday that a new era of men's soccer has arrived.

OLYMPIA - Put the names Jason Gjertsen and Josh Van Tine in your Rolodex, your Outlook, your Palm Pilot, or were ever you store important information. These are two Evergreen State College men's soccer players that you will be hearing a lot about this season.

Following a 5-0 shutout Saturday, the Geoducks put bad memories behind them and earned their first victory of the 2002 season, 1-0 over Capilano College, in the final game of the inaugural Arno Zoske Men's Soccer Tournament at Evergreen State College on Sunday.

From the opening kick, Gjertsen and Van Tine were a one-two offensive combination that the Blues had no answer for. Twelve times in the first half, twelve times in the second half, using skilled ball handling and a team effort, Evergreen broke down Capilano's defense and took a shot at the goal. Finally, in the 77th minutes they were successful.

In possession of the ball on the left side of Capilano's goalie box, with two defenders trying to catch up, Gjertsen dribbles around the on rushing keeper and sends the ball to Van Tine. With no resistance, Van Tine sent the white leather spheroid between the white post for the only score of the game.

"This victory has been four year in the making," remarked co-head coach Tom Boatright. "Even though we won three games last year, today's win was against a perennial national power, a quality win."

Limiting the Blue to just five shots on-goal is a testimony to the fact that the Geoducks are not one-dimensional. Freshman Lucas Arthur, from Eatonville, WA., anchored a well coordinated defense and repeatedly showed the intelligence and speed to run down and deny the opponent access to the goal.

But the hero of the game, according to the team, was backup goalkeeper Tommy Kneeshaw. Called off the bench less than two minutes into the game, when junior Joe Erickson when down with an ankle injury, Kneeshaw made several big college saves in the closing minutes to cement the win. For his poise and effort, his teammate awarded him the game ball.

Coach Boatright's summation of the day was simple and enthusiastic. "Today, a new era of men's soccer at Evergreen was born. This group of seasoned players and freshman will bring the glory day of soccer back to Evergreen."

The championship trophy was won by Whitworth College
(2-0), with Evergreen finishing second with Sunday's victory. Senior Rawley Doggett (Whitworth) was named Most Valuable Player and Northwest College was honored with the Sportsmanship Award.

Next Saturday the Geoducks will be in Tacoma, for a 2 p.m. game against Pacific Lutheran University. Conference action does not begin until Tuesday, Sept. 17th.
