Evergreen Turns the Heat on #19 Eastern Oregon for a 83-70 Win

January 10, 2009

Olympia, WA - After a crazy week of weather Evergreen (NAIA #15) was finally able to match up with their opponents from Eastern Oregon University (#19), a game delayed from Friday night. Both Top 25 NAIA Div II teams played hard tonight, but in the end the frustrated Mounties left the Greenhouse on the losing end of the Geoducks' fast paced play. Bolstered by a 32 point performance by Nathan Menefee (Tacoma, Wash.), ESC won 83-70.

Late in the first half the Geoducks had their hands full with a charge by the Mounties that brought EOU ahead by 1 (38-37) with a minute and a half left before the break buzzer.

By the end of the period, ESC had again pulled away with a small 6 point cushion. Two points of which were the result of Menefee's free throws after a EOU bench technical foul.

Early in the second half it appeared as if Evergreen was going to allow the Mounties to catch up, drawing three fouls in two minutes that spotted EOU an extra six points.

Unfortunately for Eastern, Evergreen inserted some points of their own, punctuated nearly 10 minutes in by a big dunk from junior Anthony Gallagher (Puyallup, Wash.) on a feed from Julio Felciano (Tacoma, Wash.).

EOU's game went south as they eventually fell behind by as much as 20 points before Evergreen sent in their reserves in the final minutes.

In addition to Menefee's game leading 32 tally, the junior had 4 assists and 2 steals. Feliciano, Gallagher and Nick Moore (Graham, Wash.) each had 10 points. Feliciano being the high rebounder for the team with 10.

The Geoducks had a considerably better shooting game then their opponents, finishing with 52% success in field goal attempts compared to EOU's 33%.

Eastern's bench was led by Paul Carollo's 14 points and 12 rebounds. Josh Landsverk contributed 13 points and 5 rebounds.

Tomorrow Evergreen will host the College of Idaho Yotes, a team that is showing a lot of improvement of late to move up to #3 in the conference after their own win over Northwest University tonight in Kirkland. Game time will be at 5:00 PM Sunday.
