Carollo's 43 Carries EOU Men Past Evergreen
January 11, 2008
LA GRANDE, Ore. - With the Eastern Oregon Men's Basketball team struggling to even play with a red hot Evergreen State team the Mounties all-time leading scorer Mark Carollo showed everyone how he got that title in a 94-93 shootout victory over the Geoducks.
Carollo played 38 minutes and pored in 43 points. The senior from Hermiston went 16-27 from the field, 3-7 from 3 and 8-12 from the free throw line. He also managed to haul in 10 rebounds on the night.
The Geoducks were led by CCC leading scorer Nate Menefee's 26 and added 7 assist. Mike Ward had 19 points, Marcus Whittaker tallied 18 and Nick Moore had 14 and 8 rebounds.
For EOU younger brother Paul Carollo also finished with a double double scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 boards of his own. Neil Fryer and Kyle Janke had 11 and 10 points respectively. Even with all of this EOU needed Finley's free throw with .3 seconds left on the clock to win the game.
Evergreen (10-4, 5-3 CCC) out shot the Mountaineers from the field (58% to 50%), from downtown ( 50% to 37%) and the free throw line ( 66% to 51%) yet somehow Eastern found a way. EOU's persistence under their own basket (19 offensive rebounds to ESC's 6) may have won the game for them.
For the Geoducks to challenge the #3 NAIA Div II ranked Mounties so well on EOU's home court speaks well of the team. The narrow loss will certainly give ESC confidence to play with the best heading into the second half of the season. EOU will play in Olympia on February 16th.
Evergreen heads into Idaho tomorrow to play The College of Idaho (#3 Cascade Conference) at 7:30 PM.
