Evergreen squeaks by in conference opener

OLYMPIA, Wash.-The Evergreen State College barely was able to put a check in the win column tonight in their game against the Cascade Thunderbirds. After a close ending to the competition, the Geoducks pulled out a 54-49 win.

Evergreen led the majority of the first half, keeping Cascade at ten points, but their defense had a momentary glitch which allowed a come back which eventually turned into a temporary change in leader. Getting points on the board proved difficult and they ended the half with 11-29 from field goal range. The half ended with the Geoducks up 27-25, senior Doug Dietz led E-State with 6 points, while Darren Russell led the Thunderbirds with 6 as well.

The second half the Geoducks had trouble once again putting points on the board and were only able to get 9 of their 25 making a game average of 37% for field goals, comparable to Cascade's 44%. Defensively they were stronger, causing 13 turnovers, but they continued to allow the Thunderbirds to gain the lead.

In the last few minutes, senior, Wes Newton, got the offense going with a drive to the basket, senior, Durriell Jones following eventually with four made free throws, putting Evergreen up 54-47. Cascade was able to get off a quick jumper at the buzzer to make the final score 54-49.

Junior, Josh Waite, lead the Geoducks in points with 11, where Pat Mattson had the team high for rebounds with 6.

The Evergreen State College take on Warner Pacific tomorrow, Saturday December 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Olympia for their second conference game of the season.
