Evergren Men's Basketball Post Season at Albertson 2005

February 23 , 2005

CALDWELL, ID -- Josh Owen hit a trey with 7:27 to give Albertson College the lead for good as The Evergreen State College men's basketball team fell out of the Cascade Conference Tournament with a 59-64 loss to the Albertson Coyotes tonight in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.

The victory for the No. 4 seeded and NAIA No. 21 Coyotes (21-8) was their seventh-consecutive CCC tourney win, dating back to the 2002-03 season.

The Geoducks (14-18) used a 13-2 run in the first half to build a 33-28 edge at halftime. However, the 'Yotes chipped away at the lead, tying the score at 44, 46, and 48, before Owen gave Albertson the lead.

Free throws down the stretch by Rich Fried, Steve Humphreys, and E.J. Costello kept the upset-minded Clams at bay.

Humphreys led all scorers with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Costello had 14 points, and Fried 13.

Walter Tucker led Evergreen, which fell to 1-6 in CCC tourney games, with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Duriell Jones and Julius Marshall added 12 and 10 points respectively. But the 'Yotes held Barson Collins to four points on the night-less than a third of his conference average.

Collins, Tucker, and Marshall all played their last game at Evergreen as did sharp-shooters Josh Peterson and Dennis Flynn. But the Geoducks will return a number of key players to build around next season.

Point guard Wes Newton will return to run the offense. Giovonne Woods, a true freshman who finished the season as Evergreen's third-leading scorer, will return to the perimeter, as will Doug Dietz, perhaps the best athlete on the team. Duriell Jones, the team's fourth highest scorer will return for his senior season.
