Men's Basketball vs Albertson 2004
December 18, 2004
OLYMPIA, WA -- After grinding out a 57-54 win over 1-7 Eastern Oregon University last night, the Evergreen men's basketball team played one of its best halves all season tonight against number ten ranked Albertson College-a team with eleven wins this year including a 87-66 shocker over NCAA Division I Boise State.
Evergreen kept pace with the 'Yotes displaying a balanced attack and their trademark blue-collar defense. Josh Peterson dropped a pair a baskets from each side of the arc to lead the Geoducks with tem points in the half. Barson Collins added an inside presence for Evergreen as he tallied nine points from the blocks.
Evergreen shot right at 43 percent for the half continuing a trend of improved shooting for the year.
E.J. Costello was the scoring leader for Albertson going three of six from three point range and netting 12 points in the half.
The two teams went back and forth throughout the period, but it looked like Albertson might pull away before the break as the 'Yotes stretched a two point lead to six with just under three minutes remaining.
But the Geoducks put together a run of their own and returned the spread to 31-29 at the end of 20 minutes.
The see-saw action continued in the second period with Evergreen taking a 39-37 lead with six minutes gone on a spin move in the paint by Collins.
But again Albertson was able to open a slight lead as the Geoducks missed a series of inside shots, four free throws and gave up three offensive boards to the 'Yotes.
Evergreen remained relentless as Collins converted, Wes Newton completed a three point play and Walter Tucker went to the floor to steal the ball from Albertson.
With 1:45 to play and Evergreen trailing by one Evergreen missed two chances to re-take the lead as Collins committed an offensive foul and Newton turned the ball over on a double-dribble.
Newton made amends as he picked Albertson on the next possession and laid the ball in for a 55-54 Evergreen lead with 50 seconds remaining.
Josh Owen hit a short jumper to put Albertson back in command with 23 seconds to go.
Wes Newton was fouled on the inbounds pass and made two free throws to put Evergreen up by one with 11 seconds to play.
But Rich Fried, who finished the game tied for a team high 17 points, followed his own missed shot and was fouled by Josh Peterson to get to the line with three seconds remaining. Fried made his first attempt from the line but erred on the second to send the game into overtime with a 57-57 deadlock.
In the extra period, the Geoducks missed four straight free throws and Albertson jumped to a four point lead that they never surrendered as the 'Yotes went on to win the contest 69-62.
Evergreen's Collins led all scorer's with 18 points going eight for 14 from the field. Peterson finished with 13 but was only able to contribute three second half points. Walter Tucker added 11 points and had a team high eight rebounds.
The 'Yotes were led by Fried and Costello with 17 a piece. Fried recorded a double-double pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds.
With the win the 'Yotes move to 10-3 on the season, 1-1 in conference while Evergreen is also 1-1 in conference and 6-8 on the year.
Evergreen's next home match doesn't get any easier as they host Western Baptist, the number one team in the nation, on January 7th.
