Men & Women Fourth at SMU
September 6, 2009
OLYMPIA, Wash. - Evergreen Cross Country opened their season today at the Saint Martin's University Invitational with both teams finishing fourth in the five school meet. Sophomore Britta Peterson had an excellent opening race, running in the front pack the entire race. She finished 6th overall with a time of 24:52 for the 6 kilometer distance.
Senior member Brian Rakestraw also had a strong day to finish fifth overall in the men's 8 kilometer race. Rakestraw bettered his '08 time on this course by 15 seconds with his 26:29 performance.
Evergreen's harriers have an off week before heading to the Conference course preview meet on the 19th that is hosted by Northwest Christian University in Eugene, Oregon.
Unfortunately for the nationally ranked (32nd NAIA) women's team, the early season rankings were to be short lived when last years number one runner Ana Casillas (Puyallup, WA) was diagnosed with a broken bone in her foot. The injury will end her season. Also lost is last years All-Conference honoree Annie Mullen who left Evergreen to pursue other educational options.
Peterson of Port Orchard, Washington will be the front runne for the team and was last years second runner at the '08 Conference Championships.
The men's team was ranked 8th in the pre-season CCC polls and will be looking to better that prediction this season.
Rakestraw (Woodinville, WA), the '08 All-Conference and NAIA National Cross Country Champs participant, is looking good based on his SMU performance and put in a solid summer of high mileage training.
