October 19, 2002 by Craig Dickson PORTLAND, OR -- Beautiful fall weather didn't necessarily mean easy running for the competitors at the Warner-Cascade Open Cross Country Meet today. The course offered unusually varied terrain in the form of steep hills, asphalt, uneven dirt, grass trails and sparse course marking. The first race of the day saw the Evergreen State women tie for the title with Warner Pacific. The men finished 3rd overall. Colleges represented in the meet included duel hosts Cascade College and Warner Pacific. Clark Community College and Northwest Christian College. Staci Anderson of Cascade College took the women's overall title over the 4 kilometer course in 15:46. The first Geoduck across the line was Candace Owens in 6th place (16:54). Despite the absence of team captain Shawn Olson, the women had not previously finished ahead or tied with either Cascade or Warner Pacific. "We had greater impact as a competitive team because we were able to run as a tighter group" remarked co-coach Kristen Mora. The Geoducks did in fact have their 2nd, 3rd and 4th runner finishing within two seconds of each other. Results: Other Evergreen Finishers
Warner Pacific - 53 pts The Warner Pacific men are currently ranked number 13 in the most recent NAIA polls meaning the Geoduck harriers had another strong challenge for them against the other four colleges represented. The second race of the day saw Warner sweep the top 3 spots, including NAIA national title favorite Chris Clancy running a very casual race and coasting in at 3rd place. Keith Darrock again led his squad with his 6th place overall (23:10) in the 4 mile race. "Keith had experienced some trouble with a back injury this week and was unsure of how he'd perform, let alone finish" noted Coach Craig Dickson. "He ran very gutsy today". Keith, like many runners on the ambiguous course, may have lost a spot in the standings due to following another runner the wrong direction. The Geoducks also brought in finishers across the line in close formation, a tactic that will continue to benefit them heading into the Conference/Regional Championships on November 9th.
