October 26, 2002 Mercer Island , WA - It felt like Cross Country weather today as the light mist drifted from Lake Washington and cooled the runners at the 4 th Annual Bellevue Community College Invite. Bodies quickly heated up with the first race of the day, leaving competitors steaming like thoroughbreds on a Kentucky morning. The college men were the first off the line today and the 35 man field charged the first 100 meters to fight for position before the course narrowed to a 2-person wide footpath for the first ¼ mile. The slightly longer than five kilometer course was a welcome change for the runners this time of the season. Most races being five miles for the men. Geoducks were able to nab two of the top-five places overall with a strong finish by the duo of freshman Josh Klimek (4 th , 16:35) and senior Keith Darrock (5 th , 16:44). The Evergreen squad finished second in the team standings. Highline Community College , which is reviving their tradition of a strong cross country program, won the team title. Clay Hemlock of Highline had top individual honors, setting a course record of 15:52. Both Evergreen squads are facing challenges with the head colds that have plagued not only the Evergreen campus, but other colleges as well. Today a number of athletes sat out or turned in less-than-average performances. The biggest challenge for most in the women's race came in the form of the bright yellow uniforms of Northwest College ( Issaquah , WA ). The powerful NWC squad proved why they are currently ranked number one in the most recent NAIA polls when they brought in nine of their runners in the top ten. Their combined score of 15 points is the lowest score you can have in cross country. Kim Stone of NWC led her team with the individual win, running away from the field with a 100 meter gap on second place. Her 18:38 was also a course record. Evergreen women earned a solid 2nd place finish in the team standings with 69 points. Candy Owens, the perennial top Geoduck this season, was nearly caught be teammate Shawn Olson at the finish line. They finished 11th (20:57) and 12th (20:58) respectively.
