Monica Heuer begins her eighth season as The Evergreen State College head women's basketball coach. Her staff this season will consist of fifth year Associate Head Mychael Heuer (Seventh Year) and Amber Evans (First Year)
Prior to the arrival of Heuer, the team had never won more than five games in a single season in five years. In fact, the team had never won on the road.
Rebuilding a program from scratch was not a new experience for Coach Heuer. With her husband Mychael as co-head coach, she founded Patten College women's basketball program in 1995 and despite numerous obstacles, built the Lions into a formidable group in only two seasons.
After two seasons at Patten College she moved to the NCAA Division I ranks as an assistant at San Jose State. That was followed by a two year stint at the University of San Francisco, assistant to Mary Hile-Nepfel. She rejoined Mychael at Patten College for the 1999-00 season and lead the Lions to a record 21-11 season, barely missing a trip to the NAIA tournament.
Showing improvement every year, the 2003-2004 season proved to be the season of "reaping the fruits." After setting the foundation the first two years, the program took off and competed at a new level finishing 11-16. With Monica's ability to bring in strong recruits, the program made it to it's first conference playoffs and set a new standard.
A graduate of Cal-State Hayward, Heuer played for the pioneer team that reached the NCAA Division II tournament. She holds an MA in Sports and Fitness management from USF. In addition to college coaching, Heuer has worked as the Compliance Coordinator and Assistant to the Commissioner of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, and as Athletic Academic Coordinator at Chabot College in Hayward assistant coach for Bishop O'David High School and Holy Names High School in California.
Monica and her husband, Mychael, reside in Olympia with their son, Alexander.
