The Evergreen Traveling Seminar Series
Seminar 501
Date/Time: August 26, 2007, 3:00 - 5:00 pm
Seminar Leader: Evergreen Faculty Member, Nancy Koppelman
Nancy has a B.A. in Liberal Arts from The Evergreen State College, an M.A. in History from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in American Studies from Emory University.
Topic: "Consuming Utopia: From Wilderness to Wal-Mart"
What is utopia? Is it the freedom of wilderness, the convenience of Wal-Mart, or something in between? Visions of a perfect world often depict a bountiful and benign land of plenty in which people exist harmoniously and effortlessly amidst a bountiful and benign natural world. What, then, does the good life have to do with goods? American society is wildly innovative, yet short on appreciation for resource limits. We are lavish consumers, but still suspect that the best things in life are, or ought to be, free. This seminar will examine utopian visions and the tensions they have inspired.
Seminar Reading: http://www.thebreakthrough.org/images/Death_of_Environmentalism.pdf
Location: Helvetia Vineyard, 23269 Yungen Road | Hillsboro OR 97124 | 503.647.7596

Greener Oasis at Super Saturday - June 16th, 2007

Saturday June 16, 2007
As tradition demands, the Alumni Board of Directors sponsored the Greener Oasis at Super Saturday.
Higher Education Day
Higher Education Day was a big success. Alumni volunteers from our three boards — Board of Trustees, Board of Governors and Board of Directors — as well as alumni from around the state, descended on the Capitol campus for Higher Education Day at the Legislature, February 20. Leading up to the event, Government Relations Director, Jennifer Wallace, scheduled alumni volunteers for meetings with key legislators. On event day, she briefed the volunteers on issues and bills, and gave tips on effectively communicating with legislators.
At a luncheon, prior to the campus meetings, Governor Chris Gregoire presented the 2007 Waldo Award for Outstanding Public Service to Public Higher Education to former Governor Booth Gardner. Pulitzer prize-winning editorial cartoonist, David Horsey, gave the keynote address, delightfully illustrated with vintage cartoons. The day ended with a reception at the Governor's Mansion.
A highlight of the day was the eye-popping herd of university and college mascots roaming the capitol halls. Maybe we're biased, but we think Speedy the Evergreen Geoduck was head and shoulders above the rest.
