Greeners in the Grand Canyon: A 14-day Trip through Geologic Time July 19-August 1, 2011

Grand Canyon

With academic content provided by Paul Butler,

Geologist,Member of the Evergreen Faculty

Evergreen Expeditions:  An academic travel program for the Evergreen community

One of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Grand Canyon is a geological spectacle. With an average depth of one mile for its entire 277-mile span, the Colorado River has cut through the Colorado Plateau and exposed a history of change that goes back over a billion years.
This Evergreen Expedition will look at the river and its environment from a variety of perspectives. Not only will we discuss the geologic history of the Colorado Plateau region, we will consider recent human impacts to the Colorado River riparian zone.

The academic component
will be taught by Evergreen geologist and river guide Paul Butler. He has been taking students to the Grand Canyon in conjunction with Grand Canyon Expeditions since 1994.

Faculty facilitator: Paul Butler  - B.A., Geography, University of California, Davis, 1972; M.S., Geology, University of California, Berkeley, 1976; Ph.D., Geology, University of California, Davis, 1984. Subjects: Geology, hydrology. Paul has provided reading suggestions about the Grand Canyon, below.

Trip Provider: Grand Canyon Expeditions (a Grand Canyon National Park concessionaire) provides one-of-a-kind dory excursions down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon that include everything from hiking and swimming in side canyons to running class IV rapids. The company is owned and operated by Evergreen alumnus Mike Denoyer '74 and has has been providing trips along the entire Colorado River for more than30 years. Hilary Adams '95 is Assistant Directing the Broadway play Collected Stories and is offering free tickets to Evergreen alumni for a few of the preview performances this month.

"This acclaimed drama by Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies (Time Stands Still) chronicles the relationship between two female writers - a celebrated New York author and her young protégé. As their fascinating story evolves, and the line between fact and fiction blurs, the twists and turns of this complex relationship weave a play that's as smart and witty as it is powerful.

Tony Award®-winning actress Linda Lavin and director Lynne Meadow (of MTC's The Tale of the Allergist's Wife) will reunite for this Broadway premiere production. Joining them is Golden Globe nominee Sarah Paulson (Still Life, Killer Joe, "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip")."

After the 7pm show on Sunday 4/25 lets out, will will go chat about the play nearby at Westway Diner. Hilary may join us for a bit to share the backstage perspective.

If you want to see the play on another night but would like to join us, I expect we will be there by 9:30pm.

These free preview tickets are available 4/22 - 4/25 here.

**Be sure when you request you tickets that you put "Hilary Adams" in the line that asks you how you heard about this deal.**

    Seminar 501
    Date/Time: August 26, 2007, 3:00 - 5:00 pm
Seminar Leader: Evergreen Faculty Member, Nancy Koppelman
Nancy has a B.A. in Liberal Arts from The Evergreen State College, an M.A. in History from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in American Studies from Emory University.

Topic:  "Consuming Utopia: From Wilderness to Wal-Mart"
What is utopia? Is it the freedom of wilderness, the convenience of Wal-Mart, or something in between? Visions of a perfect world often depict a bountiful and benign land of plenty in which people exist harmoniously and effortlessly amidst a bountiful and benign natural world. What, then, does the good life have to do with goods? American society is wildly innovative, yet short on appreciation for resource limits. We are lavish consumers, but still suspect that the best things in life are, or ought to be, free. This seminar will examine utopian visions and the tensions they have inspired.

Greener Oasis at Super Saturday - June 16th, 2007

    Saturday June 16, 2007

As tradition demands, the Alumni Board of Directors sponsored the Greener Oasis at Super Saturday.

     Higher Education Day

Higher Education Day was a big success. Alumni volunteers from our three boards — Board of Trustees, Board of Governors and Board of Directors — as well as alumni from around the state, descended on the Capitol campus for Higher Education Day at the Legislature, February 20. Leading up to the event, Government Relations Director, Jennifer Wallace, scheduled alumni volunteers for meetings with key legislators. On event day, she briefed the volunteers on issues and bills, and gave tips on effectively communicating with legislators.

At a luncheon, prior to the campus meetings, Governor Chris Gregoire presented the 2007 Waldo Award for Outstanding Public Service to Public Higher Education to former Governor Booth Gardner. Pulitzer prize-winning editorial cartoonist, David Horsey, gave the keynote address, delightfully illustrated with vintage cartoons. The day ended with a reception at the Governor's Mansion.

A highlight of the day was the eye-popping herd of university and college mascots roaming the capitol halls. Maybe we're biased, but we think Speedy the Evergreen Geoduck was head and shoulders above the rest.
