Mapping Your Education Worksheet

This worksheet and sequence of experiences is intended to help you define your values about education and to help you create your own statement of academic intentions to use in planning your study at Evergreen. At the end of this workshop, we expect that you will have:

  • Increased your knowledge and skills in identifying and articulating your values about a liberal arts education;
  • Practiced articulating your own academic planning process;
  • Considered what strengths you want to build on and what gaps you want to fill; and
  • Drafted a preliminary statement of intent for your learning at Evergreen.

New Student Advising Workshop Script

This workshop is in part a student-centered Finkel-style workshop where the students are as engaged in doing as much active work as possible without the teacher/facilitator telling them everything. Since there is so much factual information we must make sure students hear, there is also a lot of "telling". Try every chance you have to engage the students, make the presentation varied, and to allow for as much active learning and engagement as possible. These methods help learning to occur more smoothly and to be retained much better.

  • We expect facilitators to adjust the workshop to their presentation style. In one or two spots we have particularly noted this. Our goal is to make sure every student has the tools s/he needs and does some preliminary academic planning. Please make this workshop your own, but make sure you've covered the topics listed.
  • This is the workshop script to use for ALL NSAWs, including FYAD! In the middle of this script, there is a choice of Version A for all pre-registration workshops and Version B for all workshops presented after registration opens. Please choose the appropriate one and follow it to the end.
  • Words in italics throughout the script are intended for you to read aloud (or paraphrase appropriately).
