Evergreen has a generous policy of accepting credit from other accredited institutions. You will be able to transfer a maximum of 90 quarter hour credits of lower division. In addition to the lower division work, you may transfer 45 quarter hour credits of upper division work. The maximum transfer credit awarded cannot exceed 135 credits.

Generally, a freshman has 0 to 44 transfer credit. A sophomore has 45 to 89 credits. A junior has 90 to 134 credits. A senior has 135 or more credits. Evergreen requires 180 credits for a bachelor's degree.

Evergreen uses quarter hours, so we will convert semester hours into quarter hours. For example, if you have earned 24 semester hour credits: multiply 24 by a factor of 1.5 and it will equal 36 quarter hour credits.

Quick Reference: Transfer Degrees and Guides for Washington Community Colleges includes PDFs for each college. You may also wish to review Special Circumstances for deferring your admission, obtaining an application fee waiver, retention of records, late applications and other answers. Check out Go Green to see when an Admissions Counselor will visit your Washington community college.

An afterword from Admissions

How do I transfer credit from my previous college work?
An evaluation of your official transcript(s) is made after you have been admitted and paid the $50 (US) nonrefundable advance tuition deposit. In general, courses are acceptable if a minimum of 2.0 GPA or grade of C was received. Courses in physical education, remedial work, military science and religion may not be transferable. Some vocational-technical and personal development courses are transferable; others are not.

You will be able to transfer a maximum of 90 quarter hour credits of lower division work—courses numbered 100 or 200—such as English 101, Geology 250, for example. In addition to the lower division work, you may transfer 45 quarter hour credits of upper division work—courses number 300 or 400—such as Political Science 346, Philosophy 499, for example. However, we will not exceed 135 credits on our transfer credit award. Graduate school courses numbered 500 or 600 are not transferable and will not be counted toward an Evergreen bachelor's degree.

It is your responsibility to provide a final official transcript of your previous college work before you start classes at Evergreen if you want an updated transfer credit evaluation.

I want to select the courses I want transferred. How do I do this?
Evergreen's transfer credit policy does not allow students to select specific courses to transfer. To earn an Evergreen bachelor of arts degree in the Liberal Arts and Sciences, you need a minimum of 180 quarter hour credits. These credits can be earned in any academic field. Therefore, it does not matter which courses are transferred, but it does matter how many credits are transferred.

To earn an Evergreen bachelor of science degree in the Liberal Arts and Sciences, you need a minimum of 180 quarter hour credits, including 72 credits in the math and/or science fields. And included in these 72 credits, you must have at least 48 upper division credits in math and/or science. When you apply for graduation, you will review your previous coursework and your Evergreen work with a credentials evaluator from Registration and Records. It is at this time that you and the evaluator will be able to assess if you have completed the required coursework for a bachelor of science degree.

I've earned an associate degree at my community college. How will this degree transfer?
First, find your degree on PDF listed for your Washington community college. If your degree is listed in the "Designated Transfer Degree" section on the form, then your degree will transfer as a block of 90 credits. The degree name must be listed on your official transcript. Next, pay the $50 (US) nonrefundable advance tuition deposit after you've been admitted and an official credit evaluation will be done.

I almost finished my bachelor of arts degree at another 4-year college. How will these credits transfer?
Your credit will transfer on a course-by-course evaluation of your official transcript. Credits will transfer if:

  • College-level (numbered 100 or higher; e.g., Math 101). Courses numbered below 100 are remedial, not college-level and will not transfer—e.g., Math 099.
  • You completed the course with a 2.0 GPA or better, a Pass/Satisfactory or Credit.

You will be able to transfer a maximum of 90 quarter hour credits of lower division. In addition to the lower division work, you may transfer 45 quarter hour credits of upper division work. The maximum transfer credit awarded cannot exceed 135 credits. If you transfer the maximum credit, you will need 45 Evergreen credits to complete a bachelor’s degree.

I'm in high school and participating in Running Start. How will these credits transfer?
Request an official transcript of your college work and have it sent to Evergreen. After you have been admitted, pay the $50 (US) nonrefundable advance tuition deposit. A Credentials Evaluator will review your college transcript and send you a transfer credit award. Generally, college-level courses completed at a 2.0 GPA or higher will transfer toward your bachelor's degree.

Running Start is a program offered in Washington. "College in the High School" (or CHS) is a similar program offered in other states. If you are in CHS, request an official transcript of your college work and have it sent to Evergreen.

What about International Baccalaureate credits?
Credit earned through the International Baccalaureate Organization will be considered on a subject-by-subject basis. In some cases a full year of college standing is awarded to International Baccalaureate diploma holders.

How about my AP and CLEP credit?
Advanced Placement (AP) and College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) are the most common tests administered that may generate college credit. Your official exam results are reviewed through the transfer credit evaluation. As with official transcripts, you'll need to request test scores to be sent to Evergreen for credit evaluation.

Credit is awarded as long as it does not duplicate credit earned at other institutions or at Evergreen.

I went to a college that was not accredited. Can I still transfer credit?
A maximum of 45 transfer credits will be awarded by Evergreen from Non-Accredited Colleges and Universities provided the student:

  • successfully completes 96 credits (two years) at Evergreen
  • does not exceed the maximum number of transfer credits allowed
  • and will earn 45 of his/her last 90 quarter-credits at Evergreen

At the end of the second year at Evergreen, the student must submit a written request to the credentials evaluator in Admissions to have non-accredited coursework reviewed.

Will my Military Training count as transfer credit?
Some Military Training can generate transfer credit based on recommendations from the American Council of Education (ACE). Students need to submit a combination of the following documents: DD214, DD295, training records and/or training certificates. Transfer credit is not given for MOS, LDO, NWO, NER, CGR, CGW or MCE designations.

I've attended many professional development workshops offered by my employer. Will my training result in any transfer credit?
Evergreen awards credit for some learning that earns a certificate acknowledging participation and completion of a workshop, seminar, training program, etc. This review process is performed after a student has been admitted to Evergreen. The Certificated Learning Application (PDF) packet is available through the Office of Admissions. Complete the certificate evaluation cover sheet for each certificate you would like evaluated. Then, provide a pamphlet, course outline and/or syllabus for each certificate submitted.

What are Vocational-Technical/Personal Development courses?
Vocational-Technical/Personal Development (or VTPD) courses are not recognized as academic courses. You'll notice on the Transfer Guides for the Washington community colleges that VTPD courses are noted in the right hand column. VTPD work may fall into one of the following categories:

  • Occupational—e.g., bookkeeping, law enforcement, keyboarding, nursing, secretarial training
  • Skill building—e.g., remedial math, equipment operation, typing
  • Personal development—e.g., assertiveness training, personal finance

You may transfer a maximum of 15 credits of VTPD course work. If it is community college VTPD credit, it will be included in the 90 credit maximum of lower division work.

If you are completing an associate of arts degree at a Washington community college and you know that most of the coursework is VTPD, you might be interested in Evergreen's Upside Down Degree program.

An afterword from Admissions
Evergreen may not be able to offer admission to all qualified applicants if the number of applicants exceeds the number of enrollment spaces available in the entering class.

The college reserves the right to deny the applicant admission if his or her enrollment could present a physical danger to the campus community.

Once the college notifies you of your eligibility, you will be asked to send a nonrefundable tuition deposit of $50 (US) by a stated deadline to assure your place at the college for the quarter of admission. This deposit is an admissions processing fee that will be credited toward the first quarter's tuition. Admission and deposit do not guarantee your enrollment in a particular program or course.
