As the Photo Services Intern for 2004-05 I was asked to document the academic program of my choice, in an attempt to illustrate the Evergreen experience from the student's perspective. What you see here is a selection of photographs taken throughout the year as part of that assignment, in the Local Knowledge program.

As a student of the social sciences, or "community studies" as they are sometimes called at Evergreen, I was drawn to the participatory nature of the program -- as stated in the 2004 academic catalog, "Local Knowledge will explore the dynamics of community life through collaborative efforts with people in our region as they work to sustain and empower their communities."

My documentary work in this program has been augmented by my own participation in class meetings, field trips, and spring projects. I continue to be inspired and encouraged by the amazing students, faculty and community members I have met through Local Knowledge.

Special thanks to Martin Kane, my supervisor and mentor throughout this project, Local Knowledge faculty Anne Fischel and Lin Nelson, and all of the students who were so supportive of my work and this project.
