When looking for an awe-inspiring day hike, many of us look no further than the luscious scenery of the Staircase trail. Only an hour outside of Olympia, it makes for a perfect day excursion. As an added bonus, Lake Cushman, the best swimming "hole" around, is on the road to the trail head. Normally you don't have to cross these frigid waters to complete the trail loop, but we hit it right after the bridge was washed out. Some people actually went swimming in these icy waters.
