The Nuclear Reservation spans 25 square miles of desolate Eastern Washington desert. It also runs along the Colombia river, like many power plants and industries in Washington. The river was used in the cooling process when producing plutonium.
During the Manhattan Project, the plutonium for the A-Bomb dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was produced here, with instructions from Los Alamos. Contamination signs are sprinkled along the road side and create an eerie atmosphere with the reactors in the background.
